Ever wonder how the rubber stamp originated in our country? We here at Rubber Stamp Station, the top-rated online stamp distributor, were curious about it as well! After doing some research on the history of the rubber stamp, we thought we’d share our findings with you.
The first mechanical hand stamp was invented in the early 1860s by B.B. Hill. Mr. Hill called his creation the Chamberlain Brass Wheel Ribbon Dating Stamp. This innovative stamp became extremely popular during the Civil War. At this time, it was used by generals of the Union army for stamping things on notes, drafts, bills, checks, and other documents. Though this stamp was much different from the rubber stamps we know today, it definitely paved the way for future developments.
Another primitive form of the rubber stamp was discovered in 1864 by James Orton Woodruff of Auburn, New York. He reported visiting a washtub shop that had printed, curved wood blocks with rubber letters on the tubs. After seeing this invention, he was inspired to create a letter mold.
Still, the exact type of rubber stamp that we use today did not appear until August 18, 1959. On this date, Fred R. Tannery of New York submitted a patent application for a rubber stamp that he had made. His version was much more complex than earlier models, as it allowed the user to change the characters mounted on the device. Therefore, we can thank Mr. Tannery for introducing the modern rubber stamp to the citizens of the United States.
